"The war had a heavy impact on the schools. Not only did large
numbers of teachers leave the classroom for the battlefield, but
enrollment also dropped significantly as youth chose not to return to
school or to go to work. By the end of the war more than one-third of
the teachers employed in 1940-41 had left teaching."
