March - Stamp Act repealed by Parliament
having not collected any revenue due to the lack
of stamp act collectors in the colonies because
of being intimidated by mobs, and boycott of
British goods. British Prime Minister, Marquis
of Rockingham convinced Parliament to pass the
Declaratory Act the same day the Stamp Act was
repealed. It claimed Parliament had the "full
power and authority" to make whatever laws it
wanted (Barbier, 45).
May 19, 1766 - Day of Celebration in
Boston, Massachusetts when news arrived that the
Stamp Act had been repealed. John Hancock hosted
a party at his mansion on Beacon Hill with
fireworks over Boston Common and 100 gallons of
wine. Music played, drums beat, cannon fired,
and the Liberty tree was decorated with
streamers (Barbier, 44). The Stamp Act repeal
became an annual celebration (Barbier, 53).
