French General La Fayette visited America
General La Fayette from France "landed in New York in June 1824 upon
the invitation of the President and was received in every part of the
Country with the warmest expressions of delight and enthusiasm. He was
proclaimed by the popular voice the guest of the Nation and his presence
every whare was the signal for festivals and rejoicing. He passed
through the 24 States of the Union" via stagecoach. "In Kentucky
there was nothing but mud roads... (He visited Lexington, KY in May
1825)... Taking leave of four ex Presidents of the United States, he
received the farewell of the President, in the name of the nation and
saild from the Capital on a Frigate named the Brandywine Sept. the 7,
1825."

Fur Trade
Mr. Henry, the first American who trapped upon the head-waters of the
Columbia river in 1808, and General Ashley of Missouri "established a
post on the banks of the Yellowstone River in 1822" and pushed a
band of trappers across the Rocky Mountains by 1823. "In 1825 a footing
was secured, and a complete system of trapping (was) organized beyond
