  • Technology:

  • Brooklyn Bridge

July: Wire fraud discovered.  Oct: Cable spinning completed. 9 years down, 5 to go to finish.
It's magnificent twin towers, breathtaking span, cutting edge technology, and sheer beauty make Brooklyn Bridge the grandest, and perhaps the most important structure built in America during the nineteenth century. It was called "the eighth wonder of the world."

World Fair celebrating International Exhibition of nations
    Paris, France 1878
    (1 May - 31 October)

    2nd of 6 World Fairs held in Paris - 1867, 1878, 1889, 1900, 1925, 1937

Location: Champ de Mars, Trocadero (192 acres)
Architectural Wonder: main building was rectangular with the first climate controlled exhibition using ventilation pipes. There was a central promenade where the pavilions of foreign nations divergent facades made for a flamboyant patchwork. The Trocadero across the Seine river was modeled on a Roman amphitheater with a dome and two Moorish minarets.
    Visitors: 16 million
Novelties: The ice machine, electric lighting, the Statue of Liberty's giant hand, torch, and head (still under construction)
