Great Awakening Begins in the New England colonies
"Jonathan Edwards preaches a series of stirring sermons that initiate
the Great Awakening in the New England colonies. This religious revival
movement is to sweep the American colonies during the next decade.
Thousands of people are converted. As an aftermath of the Great
Awakening, the conservative clergy and wings of the old Puritan churches
lose ground as the Baptists, Methodists and Presbyterians grow in power
and influence. In the 1740s, the best known revivalist preacher is
English evangelist George Whitefield." The Almanac of American History by Arthur M.
Schlesinger, Jr. Brompton: CT 1993. (p. 84)
