Population in San Francisco: 7,000. City of Sacramento being
developed. Group of 20-30 men built a dam to divert the American River
in order to get to the gold in the river beds because most of the gold
had been picked out of the rivers by individual gold miners panning for
gold. The gold rush lured many Americans west to California. There were
over 100,000 residents within a year enough for statehood.
